GusMail offers new way to stay connected to PSU

01/23/2009

Past and present Gorillas will be able to stay closer to their alma mater than ever before thanks to a new Pittsburg State University e-mail system known as "GusMail."

"With the (old) Pitt State e-mail address, when you graduate, it's gone," said Jeff Schooley, help desk manager for Gorilla Geeks, PSU's on-campus help desk for student technology needs. "With GusMail, it doesn't go away. Students can continue to use the address when they are alums."

But that isn't the only advantage to GusMail. A licensed version of Google's Gmail service, GusMail brings with it many of the goodies Gmail is known for, such as the ability to collaborate on documents and chat instantly with other GusMail users.

In addition, GusMail offers a vast upgrade over the meager 50 megabytes of storage offered by the old GorillaMail service.

"What we have come through the help desk a lot are space issues," Schooley said. "With the limited space available for student email accounts, they can easily exceed their quota. That can result in not being able to delete, send, or receive email."

People can't delete things out. They have limited space because server space is expensive."

GusMail offers users over seven gigabytes of storage space, which means that they will never have to delete any e-mails again.

Yet another improvement is a range of options for the e-mail address itself, which will read (username)@gus.pittstate.edu. Users will be able to now be able to pick from several choices for their address name, while their username and password will be the same as the ones they use for the GUS system.

GusMail users will also be able to have their e-mails forwarded to their smartphones.

To sign up for GusMail, log on to the GUS system at http://go.pittstate.edu, click on Computer Accounts and Passwords, and then click on "Create NEW gus.pittstate.edu GusMail Account." For a limited time, users of the old GorillaMail system can have their messages forwarded to the new address.

PSU officials said they hope to transition everyone to the new system by next semester.
