Community Campaign: An opportunity to give back
03/06/2009
The Pittsburg State University annual Community Campaign will kick off next week with a breakfast recognizing an area Partner in Progress and the request for support from area businesses.
The 2009 PSU Community Campaign: Partners in Progress breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom of Overman Student Center. Cost of the full-service, hot breakfast is $5.
This is the 23rd year for the campaign, a private fundraising program that encourages Pittsburg area businesses to make financial contributions for student scholarships and academic needs at PSU.
This year, the Rex Crowley Outstanding Partner in Progress Award goes to Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center, a southeast Kansas hospital serving the health needs of thousands of patients each year.
The hospital, which opened its doors in 1903 – the same year as PSU – has served as a partner to the university since the beginning, offering training opportunities for students and donating the latest health care equipment for education.
“We’re honored to receive the Rex Crowley Award,” said Jonathan Davis, president and CEO of Mt. Carmel. “We value our relationship with Pittsburg State University. Our community is a better place to live thanks to the efforts of PSU.”
This year’s chairpersons for the PSU Community Campaign are Brian and Laura Sullivan, the owners of Lindburg Pharmacy, one of Pittsburg’s oldest businesses.
Brian and Laura, both PSU graduates, say they are proud to be leading the campaign, and hope they can influence other business owners to support the university.
“It's been awesome to watch the progression of PSU over the years," Brian said. "I can't imagine what this community would be like without it. The university is the vehicle that will bring future industries to Pittsburg, and the energy and enthusiasm it brings to the community is irreplaceable. PSU is the pulse of Pittsburg."
