PSU math relays welcome 1,000 high schoolers

Pittsburg State University will play host to more than 1,000 high school students from dozens of area schools for the 41^st annual Math Relays, to be held all day on Tuesday, April 14.

Dr. Tim Flood, chair of the Department of Mathematics at PSU, said the yearly event is a lot of work – PSU faculty members must create tests and spend hours administering and grading them - but the contest brings to PSU many potential Gorillas.

“It’s a good public relations thing with area schools,” Flood said. “It’s a chance for kids to get on our campus and see everything.”

The top 10 competitors in each of the contest’s categories will have their names listed in Kelce Hall, and the top three in each will receive medals. Flood said PSU started a new program in recent years that aims to honor outstanding students even more.

“One of the things we started doing five or six years ago is to invite back good students from area schools for Math Honor Day,” Flood said. “Thirty or so of these kids will come back on a day in the fall, and there we let them experience new concepts in math. It’s more hands-on.”
